Important Announcement Regarding the Embark Portal for Submission of Letters for 2014 Applications

Thursday, October 2, 2014

Dear Institutional Representatives for the Rhodes Scholarships, We had instructed Embark that the portal for the submission of letters for Rhodes applicants was to remain open beyond the 11:59 PM October 1 deadline, but Embark closed it when it closed the application portal last night.  We are told by Embark that they will have the letter portal open again no later than this afternoon, at which time you will be able to submit letters of endorsement and reference for your applicants.  No recommender information has been erased and all users will be able to continue where they left off once the portal is reopened.  Please note that applicants are still able to register recommenders and endorsers at will.  However, those recommenders won't be able to access the system until it is again open to them.

As you may know, we have never closed the portal for letters at the application deadline.  We have always accepted them late, but simply with no guarantee that they will be read by all selectors if late.  The sooner late letters are submitted, the more likely they will be considered along with the rest of the application.  Some selectors begin reading dossiers today.

We apologize for this situation and the inconvenience, and look forward to receiving late letters as soon as possible, which will be appended to your students' applications.

With all best wishes,
Elliot Gerson
The Rhodes Trust

Eligibility of Lawful Permanent Residents of the United States

Beginning with the selections that will take place in November 2014, certain United States lawful permanent residents will be eligible to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship.  No longer will citizenship by the time of application be the only test of United States eligibility.

To be eligible if not yet a United States citizen, an applicant must have been lawfully admitted to the United States as a permanent resident of the United States no later than five years prior to the deadline for application for a Rhodes Scholarship, and must also have maintained United States permanent resident status continuously for the entirety of the five-year period prior to and including the date of the deadline in the current year for the application for the Scholarship.  In 2014 the application deadline will be Wednesday, October 1, and a non-U.S. citizen applicant must be able to provide evidence of lawful permanent resident status during the five-year period October 1, 2009 through and including October 1, 2014.  An applicant applying as a United States permanent resident shall not have applied for the Scholarship as a citizen or permanent resident of another country, may not apply in two jurisdictions at once, and may not apply in a different national jurisdiction after having applied in the United States.

Please see the 'Applying for the Scholarship' page for a sample of the declaration that applicants will be required to submit, and a special FAQ concerning the documentation to be submitted with the declaration.
